RADical Winter Reading

This just in... 2012-2013 Winter Reading Program Details

To participate students will read from December 21th thru January 6th.

Record how many minutes the student reads on the log. Families may read to the student.

The Winter Reading Log is available online on the PTA website.
Print a copy at home or pick one up in the Doss library.
Students in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade participate by continuing to read 20 minutes each day for 10+ days. Younger readers improve best with daily practice.

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade participate by reading a minimum of 300 minutes. These students can read 30 minutes each day for 10 days or any other combination to reach at least 300 total minutes.

The final step is to return the log to your teacher or to the library before Friday January 11, 2013.
Various prizes are available for our Doss Winter Readers. Get ready to READ over winter break! Have fun!!!

Joshua Dread by Lee Bacon

I just got back from a great evening at our favorite bookstore!!! I met author Lee Bacon and learned about his book, Joshua Dread.  Here's a sneak peak...  "For most people, the end of the world is a bad thing. For others, it's a career.  Our class got out of sixth period early the day my parents tried to flood the earth." So begins Lee's book about a boy whose parents are super villians. This is the first in a planned series of three books and is sure to be a great read. Lee was inspired by a favorite Doss author... Any idea who that might be?  He also shared that he is a fan of Roald Dahl and Madeline L'Engle. Two copies were generously given to us by Brenda at Random House-- how awesome is that?!? I will get these books cataloged next week. If you want to be one of the first to read Joshua Dread, leave a comment here and I will do a drawing for the first two students who will get to check out a copy. Please do not include your last name!  The rule is first name and last initial only when you are leaving a comment.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I just learned about a cool website that you might want to check out- Investigating the First Thanksgiving: You are the Historian. I think that you will have fun learning some Thanksgiving facts and also some great research and social studies skills. Let me know what you think.  Have a Very Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Doss in PW... RADical!!!

This just in.... Doss made a big showing in Publishers Weekly.  Check it out!

Evaluating Websites

Wow!!! We had an amazing author visit thanks to HarperCollins Publishers and BookPeople. Jon Sciesczka, Adam Rex, and Tim Green were in the house to do a special program with fourth and fifth graders in the cafeteria. We cheered, we laughed, and we learned! I am so proud of the Doss Owls and their great behavior and participation. If you are unfamiliar with these authors, then you should check out Jon Scieszka Worldwide, Guys Read, Adam Rex Books, The True Meaning of Smekday, and Tim Green Books. Thanks to the wonderful RAD chairs, Sherrise Palmer and Karen Prarie for making this amazing event happen! They have a terrific committee of volunteers and we are lucky to have so much support and Doss pride! Be sure to head downtown this weekend for the Texas Book Festival---it's going to be a spectacular! Happy HOWL weekend!!!

Online Storytime

Welcome back! I have been getting things ready in the library and am excited to start checking out books soon! If you're looking for a good picture book, you may want to check out Online Storytime by Barnes & Noble. There are sixteen stories to choose from and they are all awesome! I hope that everyone had a great first day! I am looking forward to seeing you in the library!

RAD wins Shirley Igo School Library Collaboration Award!

I am so proud to be a part of the amazing collaboration with the PTA this year! Our RAD co-chairs paired with Mrs. Willis and myself to celebrate and foster a love of reading and writing. We planned a variety of creative activities that invited students to read, write, and explore literature. We hosted incredible authors, Doreen Cronin, Nick Bruel, Mike Artell, and coming soon... Herman Parish. We planned amazing programs that inspired an interest in reading. Remember-- "Who's Reading a Mystery?", the winter reading program, and keep a poem in you pocket? Think back to the beginning of the school year when we supported the Austin Public Library's card sign-up. Wasn't it fun to see the Prezi of our friend Miss Debbie sharing news about the Old Quarry library on Doss Library's Posterous? Wow!!! I am so inspired by the special events and wonderful programs that we were able to implement this year! Being recognized by the Texas PTA and Texas Library Association with the Shirley Igo School Library Collaboration Award is truly a thrill! Please congratulate Sherrise Palmer and Karen Prarie for an amazing job and for the time and energy that they generously gave to make RAD such a huge success. We are so happy that they will continue their role as co-chairs for the 2012-13 school year! Stay tuned for more wonderful happenings at the Doss library.

Mike Artell

Wow! I hope that everyone enjoyed meeting Mike Artell! As promised, Mike sent a copy of Petite Rouge in Korean for our library. It was wonderful having him at Doss and I especially enjoyed the opportunity to dance in my crocodile costume!

Nick Bruel and Bad Kitty

Wow! What a great day! The RAD committee and Book People collaborated to bring Nick Bruel to Doss this afternoon. I had the pleasure of introducing this amazing author and illustrator to the kindergarteners and to the first and second graders. Nick Bruel read Bad Kitty and taught us an that we should ask ourselves a lot of questions during the writing process. A very special thank you to Book People for bringing Nick and Bad Kitty to Doss! If you did not pre-order a book, go by the store and pick up a signed copy (or two). Nick's newest book, Bad Kitty for President, was released today so it was pretty exciting to have him with us! I bet that these books will be really popular and hard to keep on the library shelves.

Nick Bruel coming to Doss!

Our friends at Book People are bringing a special visitor to Doss next Tuesday afternoon (February 17th). Go to the Doss PTA website to order an autographed copy of one of his hilarious books!

Wonderful Winter Readers!

Wow! I could not be prouder of the 80 plus students who have already turned in their Winter Reading Logs! You are AMAZING!!! I know that I enjoyed several good books over the break and am glad to see that I am not alone. I'd love to hear about the books that you read so post a comment here and recommend a book to your classmates. It's not too late to turn in your log- so bring it to the library and pick up your prize!!!
