RAD'ical September!

Phil Bildner with RAD committee, Mrs. Lang & Mrs. Palmer
Mrs. "Gobble Gracker" Lang with Abby Hanlon

We had a great September! On the morning of the 22nd we hosted Phil Bildner for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Phil is a picture book and chapter book author. He is this year's winner of the Margaret Wise Brown Prize for Children's Literature for his picture book, Marvelous Cornelius. His message included the importance of reading, writing, editing, hard work, and kindness! His energy and excitement were contagious and we were so fortunate to get to spend time with him. Phil suggested many great books for our owls to read and encouraged them to work hard and do their best. The kids came out in their jerseys to celebrate the newest book in the Rip and Red series. They were excited and engaged for the visit. It was a great learning opportunity and a reminder of the value of bringing authors to our school

That same day BookPeople brought us Abby Hanlon, author/illustrator of the Dory Fantasmagory series. The second and third graders welcomed Abby while wearing their handmade fantasmagory crowns. Abby defines "fantastmagory" as a dream-like state where real life and imagination are blurred together. She inspired us with her enthusiasm and creativity. I know that the kids love her fun characters and silly stories!

Mrs. Lang, Ridley Pearson, and Mrs. Palmer
4th and 5th graders met Ridley Pearson one week later. He encouraged students to observe, write, and re-write, and further stated that "If you are turning in your first draft- you're turning in your weakest effort". He also reminded young writers of the importance of reading and reading and then reading some more! Ridley also spoke about perspective and the fact that writers have to see what readers see... and what they don't. Once again, BookPeople brought us an amazing author and they are going to do it again on November 4th!

Shannon and Dean Hale will be talking to our 1st and 2nd graders in the morning on Friday, November 4th about their Princess in Black series. This early chapter book series is so much fun! Shannon has visited Doss before and I am thrilled that she will be back with her husband. BookPeople has already posted the order form for books at their online store. We are thankful for their collaboration and support! We encourage you to purchase books here to support our local, independent book seller. Thanks so much! Happy reading!!!
