Winter Reading Challenge!

I am so excited about this year's Winter Reading Challenge! It is new and improved and will hopefully encourage all of the owls to access AISD's many databases and electronic books as well as Doss' subscriptions to PebbleGo and PebbleGoNext. Teachers sent home a copy of the challenge printed on blue paper, a bookmark with all password information for databases and electronic books, and a yellow quarter sheet ticket for myON this week. Please sign and return the challenge sheet after break. We will celebrate participation with hot cocoa on the playground sometime after January 6th. Happy reading, wondering, & exploring! Enjoy the break!

The winter break hasn't been much of a time to read for me because family is around and it's the holidays! For the Winter Reading Challenge the first box says to read a picture book, so I read The Giving Tree. It has always been one of my favorite books and I decided since I haven't read it in a while, I'll just refresh my brain by reading this book for one of my boxes. Not only did I read The Giving Tree, I am reading Inside Out and Back Again. This book is in Prose form and has a title to each poem. Because I recommend this book, here is a summary about it.
Inside Out and Back Again is about a girl named Ha from Southern Vietnam. She is stuck in the middle of the Vietnam War where Northern Vietnam, China and the Soviet Union fight against Southern Vietnam and America. Ha has to go through her Father dying before she was born and being forced to evacuate her hometown, Saigon in South Vietnam. She boards an overloaded ship until the U.S Navy finds them and gets them on a plane to America. A cowboy is willing to offer a small house and some borrowed dishes and furniture. Ha's family tries not to mourn their father but it's hard to not think about him when his presence is missing from their family. Can Ha push through even though her is dead, her hometown is in ruins and she is picked on at school?
I really hope anyone reading this post is inspired to read Inside Out and Back Again!
    - Neve C.
